Thursday Feb 28

Well. Such a nice feeling you've all left with me - meeting for the first time in a while.

We started poetry today - with a few funny poems for homework.

Here are the poems:

And here is the notation that we used for the first part of Task One - the Journal for this unit:

I'm going to have to bring my A game after today for these notes on the board. I'll do better.

Ok, hopefully Friday isn't a snow day, but there are no guarantees these days. Hopefully we'll see everyone tomorrow!

Tuesday and Wednesday Feb 27

Wednesday is a snow day.

Two Things: If you are bored, take a peek at the Links for Poetry. I added a Level Three-ish example for the Powerpoint for us.

You can still email me in Task Three Writing. Please use Chesserhandin1 @ gmail.com .... pretty please.

If not, wait until tomorrow .... hopefully it won't be a snow day again ... and hand it in on paper.

now ... enjoy your snow day!

.

...and just to make it official ...

Tuesday was a special day – a school presentation day. During Period two, please meet the class in Portable 2 to take attendance and then take them to the cafeteria at 10:25 – 11:25am

1)Between 9:20 and 10:20, students should be picking a poet from the link from the class website and emailing their choice to the teacher at the email on the red corkboard in the classroom.
2) Students should then also look at the example for the Poet Presentation on the same site

3)students should have three poems also picked and prepared for Wednesday

Fri Feb 22

We finished off the Task Two Presentations in class today - if you did not present, you need to sit and arrange with the teacher how we can finish off your assignments.

After that, we got a copy of the Poetry Unit and the due dates for it. I posted the due dates up on the wall of the classroom. I should be able to get the due dates up on this blog shortly.

In brief, we should be done this unit before we go the March Break. I'll be working on posting Helpful Links for this unit on the right-hand side of the blog. I've already posted the link for the Task 3 Poet presentations. Some students already signed up for that. I will also post a "Level Three-ish example", just as I did for the Short Pieces Unit.

We also have the Task 3 - Piece of Writing left to complete and hand in on Feb 27.

So ... here is an example of a poem that we will listen to on Monday:

Thursday Feb 21

We did as many presentations as we could today.

We should be finished. We'll see tomorrow.

We worked on our Task Three Writing today and made this video period 4 to share:

I also did share a few of my ideas about poetry in class today. and we saw this poem, too:

Wed Feb 20

What we did do today was get through a few presentations first. It was a pretty exciting experience and I'm grateful for your sharing of ideas.

We also got a chance to do some limited conferencing about the Task 3 Writing assignment due Feb 27.

I updated the due dates in the classroom and I will change the due dates online soon. It'll depend on the wireless system I'm on at the moment.

By the end of the class, I was also able to chat with students about outstanding work that is owed from Task One. I also let students know that we would be starting the Poetry Unit on Monday.

Tuesday Feb 19

We were all welcomed back to learning English today in Portable 2. It was a great feeling to be back at it together.

We talked about the Writing Task 3 that is due Feb 26th.

We did a short presentation as to where the students should be and here is the link to that powerpoint.

We then also had a few presentations done, too.

There are some in the class that need to make arrangements for writing the quiz that I handed back, too.

Thursday Feb 14

We had our quiz today.

Then I conferenced with students while others finished their quiz and collected Journals.

Monday Feb 11

Today we read a classic short story - Tell Tale Heart by Edgar Allen Poe. What a great time!

We got the questions for the assignment, and then I got a chance to conference with most of the class about topics for the presentation and the expectations for that assignment.

I also mentioned how the assignment board and blog work and why I do both in person, on the wall reminders of the due dates for assignments as well as online virtual reminders as well.

I'm hoping we don't get a snow day tomorrow, but if we do, things will still be due on Feb 13.

Friday Feb 8

Today we were back in the class. It was chilly out and it was kind of snowy at times, but we got a class in and done today!

Next week is a different story, but we will continue on.

Today we read another story - the classic On The Sidewalk Bleeding by Evan Hunter. The link there has the story and the questions are on the same document.

We also chatted about the Task Two Presentation and had most sign up by the end of class. We talked about how to do a decent presentation and how to do really awful Powerpoint.

Ok ... we will hope for 30 degress Celsius weather by the end of the weekend!

Wed Feb 6

you heard it here ... stay home, schools are closed!

See you Thursday!

Tuesday, February 5, 2019

Tuesday Feb 5

We took up the homework in class ... or at least I offered and no one wanted help, so we moved on.

We did do the terms for the story unit today and then explored the definitions we need to include in our Journal entries for Feb 13.

I do have a power point I'll upload here. I'll have ot get on a proper wireless system though.

In any case, we also read the short story " The Long Journey" by Sue Mann. I'll upload the story tonight when I get home.

Some students also signed up for the Task Three Presentation topics, too.

We also got the hole punch into the class today ... and the Kleenex.

Pic is unrelated.

Monday Feb 4

Ok here are the questions

1. The first sentence makes you think the TONE of the story will be funny. What are two other details in the story that support this funny tone?

2. Despite this light/funny tone, the rest of the story is serious. What are two things that make this a serious story?

3. Describe what you think Mrs. Jones looks like. What do you think about her?

4. What does Roger look like? What do you think about him?

5. What is the kindest thing that a stranger has ever done for you?
